BREAST FEEDING (LACTATION) SUPPORT

Emotionally, breast feeding is an extremely rewarding experience. During the newborn period, it facilitates the mother/infant bond. Watching your baby thrive on your milk is a joy.

Santa Fe Birthing Community offers breastfeeding help and support, postpartum care for mom and baby, help and advice for new mothers and breastfeeding support for moms with twins or premies from a certified lactation consultant, in the comfort of your own home.

Many women choose to breast feed because it offers a multitude of health benefits to both mother and child. It is economically the best choice while being available anytime, anywhere. Mother’s milk contains a perfect balance of nutrients as well as significant immunological benefits. This superior milk is created specifically for your child’s needs. Breast milk can also be used to heal diaper rash, ear and eye infections, and even sore or cracked nipples.

The early days and weeks of breast feeding play a critical role in its overall success. Mothers and babies usually return home from the hospital before the milk has come in and their breast feeding has been fully established. Many questions and concerns naturally arise about such things as positioning the baby for nursing, the baby’s latch and suck, nipple soreness, engorgement, adequate milk supply, the infant's weight loss or gain. Qualified support can make a huge difference in both the breast feeding experience and overall success for baby and mother.

As a seasoned R.N. and lactation consultant, Joy has assisted many mothers in turning breast feeding challenges into deeply satisfying experiences. To this end, she incorporates both the science and art of breast feeding.

During a 2-hour home consultation, Joy will explore the cause of all feeding  issues.

Acknowledging the mother’s feelings and intuition about what is happening is an invaluable piece of this process. Vital reassurance enhances the mother’s ability to trust her body and the breast feeding process.

Two follow-up phone calls are provided to ensure optimum success.
