ABOUT SANTA FE BIRTHING COMMUNITY RESOURCES

We are experienced in supporting Santa Fe parents while they meet the challenges of nurturing a new family.

Elizabeth Christine was drawn to birth work as a way of sharing the joy and wisdom she gained by birthing and raising four children of her own. She has been offering her love and support to expectant couples in Santa Fe through classes and doula services since 2004.

“My growing family lived in rural northern New Mexico where my husband and I had a home business.  Supported by the rarified energy of the high New Mexican dessert, we were drawn to a living experiment... supporting the children to follow self-directed education. It has been a profound experience to witness them each develop their gift for the world. What I saw brought a new level of understanding and insight into the human potential. As a result of this profound experience, I am called to be of service to families who are bringing in the next generation.

“In 2003, I met Pam England, the author of Birthing From Within. Birthing From Within mirrored the level of creativity I had lived with my children. I had discovered a form through which to begin my work with parents.  I took my initial training and  began working closely with Pam. Shortly after this I became a certified Birth Doula as well as a Childbirth Educator.”

Joy Lanum is a R.N. and Certified Lactation Consultant.  She is the mother of three and grandmother to seven. Joy brings over 30 years of experience as a maternal-child and pediatric R.N. into your home.

“My time is spent between hospital employment and postpartum/newborn home care and lactation consultations. I began home care in 1987 while I was working as a nurse in a birthing center.  It was then that I became aware of the new mother’s need to have an experienced woman help her after she had returned home with her baby.  During home visits I realized how much I had to offer to mothers who were attempting to care for themselves while learning to care for a new baby. Since then my ongoing focus and commitment is in supporting new families through the postpartum period.

“I find home-visit work satisfying and rewarding. I am honored to be present to the birth of new families.  What a privilege to serve my community in this realm!”

Mona Malin became a birth and postpartum doula with hopes of offering the kind of nurturing support, which she observed as missing from our culture. She has been serving new moms in Santa Fe since 2005.

“ I remember learning that my aunt in Egypt had an extended ‘fortnight’ of postpartum care. For weeks she was able to stay in bed with her infant while receiving warm, nourishing meals and massages. My mother, here in the States, was back up and about within 5 days…as was I.

Realizing this disparity in cultural protocol astonished me and fueled my desire to work with new mothers. My deep connection to ancient tribal and communal traditions has served as a powerful frame of reference and a source of inspiration in my work with women who are pregnant, birthing, and in postpartum; as well as those living with miscarriage and stillbirth.

My own experiences have taught me how key the recovery period is to a balanced unfolding of the family in the years following birth. I enjoy creating a personalized protocol of recovery with each mother, including the care, nourishment and rest she requires.”

“Herbs themselves have been the great teachers in my life. As I connect and use the plants, they bestow great wisdom and healing. It is deeply fulfilling to share the ancient knowledge of these powerful plants as supportive and healing allies for pregnancy, birth and postpartum.”
